Freedom of Speech
One of the world’s long-standing issues is that of freedoms. Since the ancient Athenian’s defense of freedom of persuasion in the 6th century to the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America ensuring freedom of speech and religion and the Civil War over slavery, freedom in any way has been a huge issue. So what does this issue mean to me? That is what I am going to answer on this page.
My experience with these freedoms is limited. I am not a slave and my words are not censored. I have never seen these freedoms being restrained or eliminated. However, I still have an opinion regarding these freedoms. I believe that although these are all valid freedoms, some do need limitation. For example, let’s look at freedom of speech. Do you think someone should be allowed to verbally threaten you in a large-scale way? Another example is freedom of press. We know that some articles get their point across through powerful words and searing comments. But isn’t there a way to get an opinion through without offending other people?
These freedoms carry over to my blog here. I would not be violating my freedoms if I posted a heavily racist article. However, because that might really offend a reader, I would try to convey my opinion in a nicer way. I will have to be careful not to offend anyone (but it’s hard to be racist in a bird blog). So next time you are about to call someone a name in a YouTube comment, remember this article – don’t take advantage of your freedom. Use it in a good way.
